One goal of Senior Legal Services is to assist seniors who want to age in place in their homes and communities. SLS provides legal services to preserve homeownership and sustainable housing for low income Baltimore Seniors.

Foreclosure or Tax Sale – Many seniors find themselves in a situation where they are in danger of losing their home to foreclosure or tax sale. This could be a surprise or something that they knew was going to happen. The best thing to do is to address the issue as soon as possible. There may be steps you can take to save your home.

Financial Stability – an uncertain financial situation could put your housing at risk, especially if your budget is already tight. Take action right away if you have a change in income, no matter the source, to make sure you maintain the financial stability necessary to keep your home.   

Financial Exploitation – If someone misuses your funds or property for their own benefit, this is financial exploitation. Seniors can lose their money, possessions, or homes when they are taken advantage of by strangers, trusted friends, or even family members. Sometimes, there are steps you can take to recover what was wrongfully taken from you. The sooner you do this, the better. See “Elder Justice” section for more information on this topic.

Advance Planning – creating documents like a Will, Power of Attorney, or Deed allows you to have more peace of mind and control over your future. Your planning now can ensure that your home passes to your loved ones with clear title.

Senior Legal Services’ Project Household works in tandem with Housing Upgrades to Benefit Seniors (HUBS), a project which places social workers in the community to coordinate necessary repairs, weatherization and maintenance for homes owned by seniors.
